Thousands of runners are set to take part in the Green Park Reading Half Marathon this weekend, with widespread road closures planned across the town.

The race, taking place on Sunday 22 March, will see a 13.1-mile route pass through central Reading, prompting rolling road closures throughout the day.

Roads closed from early morning

Reading Borough Council has warned that roads along the route could be shut at any point between 06:00 and 16:00.

Drivers are being urged to plan ahead and allow extra time for journeys, with diversions in place while closures are active.

Nearly 50 roads are expected to be affected, with closures lifted as soon as it is safe after runners have passed.

Route through the town

The race will begin at 10:15 GMT in Green Park, before heading through Whitley and the University of Reading campus, crossing the River Kennet and moving into the town centre.

Runners will then continue west towards Prospect Park, before looping back via the A33 to finish at the Select Car Leasing Stadium.

Travel disruption expected

Bus services will also be affected, with some routes suspended during the busiest period of the race.

Access from the south of the town is expected to be particularly restricted while runners are on the course.

Community event

The Reading Half Marathon, first held in 1983, is one of the UK’s most popular running events and attracts thousands of participants and spectators each year.

Councillor Adele Barnett-Ward said the event creates a “wonderful atmosphere” but urged residents to check closure times before travelling.

A 3km mini marathon will also take place earlier in the morning within Green Park.

Residents can find full details of affected roads and timings on the official event website.
