Reading FC Ruben Selles confirmed that winger Femi Azeez missed the Royals’ opening day trip to Birmingham City with a back injury.

Speaking to the media in his pre-match press conference on Thursday, Selles spoke about the injury doubts of both Jeriel Dorsett and Kelvin Abrefa, but did not highlight Azeez.

After Azeez was omitted from the squad, this led to several fans theorising that he may be sold by the club. The 23-year-old has been subject to transfer interest by a host of Championship clubs throughout this summer window, including Millwall, Plymouth Argyle, Stoke City and others.

However, Selles shut down any speculation that he is unsettled at the club in his post match press conference following the team’s impressive performance at Birmingham.

He said: “Yesterday in training he (Azeez) felt something in his back and he went inside.

“It’s no problem, it’s not about one player.

“This squad is not about one player or even one manager. It is about how we do things together.”

Azeez enjoyed an excellent campaign last season under Selles as he featured in all 46 of Reading’s League One matches and scored eight goals and claimed eight assists.

Reading are back in action on Tuesday night away to Colchester in the Carabao Cup first-round before they host Wigan Athletic on Saturday in their first home League One match of the campaign.
