A petition signed by hundreds of residents calling for a pedestrian crossing outside Earley Station has been presented to the council.
The petition, started by MP for Woodley and Earley Yuan Yang in 2022, suggests a crossing be put in at the junction of Station Road.
The station is used by more than 1,000 passengers a day, with easy access to nearby Reading, Wokingham and London.
It is also a major crossing between Woodley and Earley, used by children to reach Maiden Erlegh and Bulmershe schools.
Wokingham Borough Council heard from town councillor Andy Croy, also a candidate for the borough’s upcoming Maiden Erlegh and Whitegates by-election.
Andy Croy said on May 22: “The petition clearly demonstrates the considerable support for a pedestrian crossing at this location.
“The traffic is fast and the road is busy. The two pedestrian islands are not always big enough to cope with the number of people trying to use them in busy periods.”
Mr Croy said he has submitted a formal application for a crossing on the council’s website, but urged support from the executive.
The Labour town councillor added Wokingham Road will be impacted ‘by the many new cars in the area’ due to local housebuilding projects.
Earlier this month Yuan Yang said: “This is an issue that’s bugged me for a long time, particularly when I was walking my old dog.
“I often see commuters dashing across the road when leaving the station, trying to find a moment between cars to cross.”
