BROAD Street Mall is marking Great Big Green Week with a whale of an art installation, as well as competitions and helpful resources for better sustainability.
The shopping centre has become the temporary home of an eco-friendly whale installation made of recyclable and degradable biomaterials.
The giant sculpture features a recycling point where customers can drop off their plastic bottles.
Broad Street Mall is also running a competition on its social media accounts to name the installation and win a Green Week-themed prize.
Visitors are invited to check out Broad Street Mall’s sustainability guide, designed to help customers reduce the impact of their shop.
The Great Big Green Week sees seven days of community action to improve sustainability practices and reduce the environmental impact.
Communities, organisations, and informal groups can sign up and hold events to engage the public or communicate with politicians on the environment and sustainable practices.
This year the year is observed from June 8-16, with events such as clothing swaps, upcycling workshops, and discussion panels, run by libraries, sports clubs, and educators, among others.
Steven Connolly, Centre Manager at Broad Street Mall, said: “Sustainability is an important focus for us at Broad Street Mall and we are always looking at ways we can better tackle climate change.
“We hope that this will encourage families to think about the importance of recycling.
“We hope that people will take away with them some key tips that they can share with the wider community, as well as initiatives they can implement in their own day-to-day lives.”
