Reading heritage enthusiasts are invited to a talk on the history of Sutton’s Seeds later this month.
Hosted by the Reading branch of the University of the Third Age (u3a), Seeds and Bulbs: The Suttons Story will take attendees on a historical tour of what was once a staple of Reading produce.
Historian Richard Marks will be exploring the history of Suttons, from humble beginnings in 1806, through to how the company took its place at the heart of Britain’s horticultural industry and as a major exporter across the globe.
“Sutton’s Seeds was a household name for 200 years,” said Richard. “Gardeners trusted the reliability of their products. But how did Sutton’s gain its reputation for reliability and quality that came to be a cornerstone of its brand?”
Richard is a Berkshire-based historian who has written about industrial, military and railway history, and is currently researching industrial development in the Victorian era. He has a PhD in economic history from the University of Reading and is a regular speaker at family history societies, local history groups and heritage organisations.
Just like Reading u3a – a local educational charity for retired people – Richard’s aim is to educate and entertain, leaving the audience with a new perspective and wanting to learn more.
Reading u3a is delighted to be hosting him for this open meeting on Monday, April 22, at 2pm at the Abbey Baptist Church, Abbey Square, Reading.
All are welcome, free entry with no need to book. Further details can be found at www.readingu3a.org.uk.
