FORMER BERKSHIRE CCC cricketer Shoaib Bashir has been awarded with a call-up to the England Cricket senior test team.

The 20-year-old spin bowler has impressed the England selection team which has led to them giving Bashir a surprise inclusion in the latest test squad.

Bashir started his journey with the Surrey youth set up and then represented Berkshire in 2022.

Bashir made his first-class debut for his county side Somerset just six months ago and has picked up 10 wickets since.

Bashir was included in England’s recent training camp in Abu Dhabi and has now been selected to play in the England test side who will face India in Hyderabad on January 25.

England men’s team director Rob Key said: “We have this (footage) app and every now and again you catch a glimpse of a couple of balls, and you see that there’s something different that looks special.

“You see the potential, then you try to find out about the character.

“Someone like Bashir, his ceiling is really high. Life is always about how good someone’s good is, not how bad their bad is.

“He’s very raw, he’s going for experience, albeit we won’t be afraid to play him if required.

“This is the start of his journey where we will hopefully see a world class spinner in the future.”
