Reading FC fans have reacted after co-owner and chairman Rob Couhig penned an open letter to address supporters following a tough few weeks for the club.
Many fans have become unsettled and disappointed with the management of Leam Richardson as the Royals saw their play-off hopes left in tatters following recent damaging results and performances.
Large sections of the fanbase have criticised Richardson’s negative and defensive approach, however Couhig has given his backing to the manager.
Couhig said: “Since Leam Richardson’s arrival, we have seen clear progress. In terms of points accumulated, we have bee among the stronger sides in the division. There have been impressive wins, resilient draws and as we have experienced in recent weeks, some difficult moments as well. That is the nature of football.
“What Leam has brought is stability, organisation and a clear identity. Just as importantly, he has brought the right approach. At this stage of our development, that matters.
“We all want to see free-flowing, attacking football and that will come. But before that, you must build the foundations of a successful team. That requires discipline, structure and at times, a results-first mentality. Progress takes time.”
Meanwhile, many fans have been left dismayed by Couhig’s open letter and have responded.
One fan said: “Richardson will never give us fast flowing, attacking football. He’s pulled the wool over your eyes again with his waffle. Definitely won’t be bothering for the rest of the season.”
Another added: “Players and fans are frustrated with the manager. If you actually “listened” to us, then you would sack him. Got a feeling that many fans, including myself, won’t want to spend their hard earned money to watch the style of football we play under Leam.”
One more continued: “You are wrong Rob Couhig. It’s been absolutely soul destroying going to the match the last few months. Leam’s brand of football is totally devoid of joy or excitement. Fans are becoming ambivalent to attending, now the players are speaking out publicly. I’m afraid his time is up.”
However, some fans did support Couhig’s view.
One said: “Decent statement from Rob. See out the season and address stuff that needs dealing with in the off season. Solidified L1 for next year, regroup and go again. Supporters need to back it.”
Another added: “Thank you for your commitment to our club and open communication. I can honestly say that while the team has collected good points, the entertainment has been disappointing given the quality of our squad, this is both surprising and concerning. Can you please comment?”
