Thames Valley Police will carry out a “highly visible and robust” policing operation for Saturday’s League One fixture between Reading FC and Cardiff City at the Select Car Leasing Stadium.
Section 35 dispersal orders will be in place across parts of Reading from 8am until 8pm on 18 April as a preventative measure aimed at reducing antisocial behaviour and ensuring public safety.
The powers allow officers and Police Community Support Officers to move on individuals or groups who are causing, or are likely to cause, harassment, alarm or distress within designated areas.
The orders will cover zones around both the stadium and Reading town centre.
Alongside the dispersal powers, police will deploy a range of tactics including football spotters, mounted officers, tactical cycle units, police dogs and drones to support the operation and provide reassurance to the public.
Chief Inspector Dave Washington, who is acting as tactical commander for the match, said the majority of supporters behave responsibly but warned that disorder would not be tolerated.
“We want fans to enjoy the match, support their team and return home safely, but antisocial behaviour and disorder will not be tolerated,” he said.
“While the vast majority of supporters behave responsibly, we will take firm action against anyone intent on causing disorder, including arrests and football banning orders.”
He encouraged fans attending the match to engage with officers on the day if they have any concerns.
“If you are coming to the match, please say hello to our officers and speak to police, staff or stewards on the day if you have any concerns,” he said.
Police said they will continue working with both clubs, partner agencies and local communities to ensure a safe event and to prevent those posing a risk of antisocial behaviour from impacting others.
