A new look for a pub at a busy junction in Reading has been approved as the brewery that owns it is seeking to do an extensive refurbishment.

The Sportsman is situated at the junction of Shinfield Road and Elm Road in Reading.

It is located near homes in Whitley, Earley and Shinfield, with Tesco Express, Specsavers, Greggs and other shops situated opposite in the Whiteknights Retail Centre.

The pub is due to get a new look as Greene King, its owning company, is looking to improve it with a £249,000 makeover.

A post on Facebook by Greene King Pub Partners states: The Sportsman will be undergoing an extensive refurbishment to rejuvenate the space, making it a fresh and vibrant destination for both locals and visitors.

The company is looking for a landlord to take it on as a ‘Hive’ pub, a franchise concept Greene King launched in November 2021.

Greene King has won permission to give the pub a new look from Reading Borough Council’s planning department.

The Sportsman is currently painted white with green signage.

Following the investment, the approved designs show it coloured dark blue with golden lettering.

Also, the pub sign in Elm Road, which currently features a horse racer, will be replaced with a sign showing a football, a rugby ball and a cricket bat.

You can view the approved application by typing reference PL/25/1483 into the council planning portal.
