Reading defender Nelson Abbey has completed his departure from the club to join Greek side Olympaicos.

The 20-year-old rejected a move to Luton Town after having a bid accepted by the club in favour of joining the side who have the same owner as Premier League Nottingham Forest.

Abbey made his Reading first-team debut in September 2020 in an EFL Cup match before he made his first league appearances in the Championship last campaign.

After impressive performances in the EFL Trophy, including a 9-0 win at Exeter City, Abbey forced his way into Ruben Selles’ first-team plans for League One.

The centre-back has won the hearts of Reading fans with his impressive displays which saw him capture the attention of clubs in the Premier League, Championship and abroad.

He played a total of 23 League One matches for the Royals having risen through the ranks in the academy to make an impact in the first-team.

A statement from the clubs reads: “Reading Football Club can confirm that Nelson Abbey has completed a move to join Greek side Olympiacos for an undisclosed fee.

“As our 63rd Academy graduate, the young defender made his first team debut for the Royals in September 2020; just a fortnight after celebrating his 17th birthday, when he came off the bench in a Carabao Cup tie against Luton.

“Since then, Nelson has gone on to make 31 first team appearances in all competitions – becoming a first team regular and captaining the side on various occasions this season. Abbey’s performances also earned him a call up to the England Men’s Elite League squad in October, making 3 appearances.

“Everyone at the club would like to wish Nelson the very best of luck in his career.”
