A SCHOOL in Reading has given a final send off to its 60th anniversary year with a future-bound flourish.
Little Heath School, Tilehurst, has been marking six decades of education with a programme of events celebrating its history and looking ahead to its future.
It began by seeking submissions from alumni for its 60 Voices project, which collected stories and memories from former students about their time at the school.
Students were invited to take part in events such as a history quiz, looking at archive photos of the site, exploring some of the student and alumni’s achievements, and watching a video examining the school’s past.
They were also given the opportunity to attend a 1960s style tuck shop and to enter the draw for the Student 60 Prize.
The prize draw, suggested by a pupil, with more than 60 items donated by organisations around Reading available to be won.
Now the celebration has culminated in a time capsule event, where students and staff looked ahead to the school’s 100th anniversary.
They buried a capsule containing Little Heath memorabilia, including a letter and a video message from the headteacher, David Ramsden.
He explored the ethos and aspirations of the school and the spirit which defines it in its 60th anniversary year, along with letters from students, photographs, and a number of important historical documents.
The capsule has been put on display in the school and is now set to be opened in 2063.
This year also saw the school awarded Green Flag accreditation for their environmental efforts just one year after establishing a student-led Eco-Committee.
