Woodley Town Council is inviting residents to come together for a special event on Friday 15 August, marking the 80th anniversary of Victory over Japan (VJ) Day; the day that signalled the end of the Second World War.

To honour this historic occasion, a free, informal community drop-in afternoon will be held from 10am to 3pm in the Miles Suite at the Oakwood Centre. The event will provide an opportunity to reflect on the sacrifices made and to remember the significance of peace following the war in the Pacific.

Throughout the day, original footage from VJ Day will be shown on screen, offering a moving glimpse into the celebrations and reflections from August 1945. A series of commemoration boards will also be on display, featuring stories, photographs, and memories. Guests are welcome to come and go at their leisure and free tea and coffee will be available for all who attend.

Cllr David Bragg, Woodley Town Mayor said: “VJ Day in 2025, marking the 80th anniversary of the Allied victory over Japan, commemorates the end of World War II in 1945 when Japan surrendered, following the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. It’s a significant occasion for remembrance and reflection.”

The event is open to all and free of charge. Whether you have a personal connection to the events of 1945 or simply want to learn more, please come along and join us in remembering a moment that shaped history.

Can You Help Tell Woodley’s Story?
