Are you like me and always looking for somewhere different to go for a nice meal?

Well, let me tell you about the new Tapa’s restaurant 1560 based over at De Vere’s Wokefield Park Estate.

It’s a hidden gem and definitely somewhere we will look forward to returning to and recommending to friends.

My husband and I had a date night and went to 1560 on an early Saturday evening. If you’ve never been it’s a beautiful approach. A long drive up through beautiful grounds to a the stunning Wokefield House.

We arrived for a 6pm reservation and made our way thorough the entrance to 1560 lounge and bar. We were greeted with the most wonderful welcome by the restaurant and bar manager Domingo Castro. It’s such a breath of fresh air to have some good old-fashioned hospitality.

Being the first people to enter the restaurant meant we had our pick of seats. We sat by the large exterior door with views of the grounds, each given a menu and asked our drinks orders, I opted for some water and my husband a beer.

Sometimes when out for a meal I find the menu overwhelming, so many options to choose from so tapas is perfect for me. Being able to have a selection of different dishes and flavours – it’s all about the flavours!

Starting off with a sharing board, vegan feta, tapenade, olives, sundried tomatoes and bruschetta £13.00 followed by three tapas each, which we shared.

My choice was Gambas al ajillo, king prawns, garlic, olive oil, lemon and chilli, minus the chilli because I’m not good with anything hot £9.00. Pollo rebozado con miel, a battered chicken, honey and grain mustard, £7.00, and Croquetas de Jamon, Deep fried cured ham, berchamel croquette, £9.00. Mark choose the patatas bravas, £6.00, Champinones al ajillo, wild mushrooms in garlic sauce £7.00 and Chorizo al vino, Chorizo sauteed in red wine, £7.00.

The food arrived in quick succession, looked fantastic and smelt delicious; we started tucking into the dishes. I really liked the sharing board, but Mark was not a fan. I think that was because he would have preferred the meat option. I really liked it and enjoyed the vegan feta having never tried it before.

As we sat, talking and enjoying our meal the restaurant started to fill up, the lights dimmed down and the atmosphere changed as the evening grew darker. The staff were very attentive without being overbearing, checking in on us to make sure we had everything we needed and engaging with questions we had about the place and the menu.

Alongside the tapas menu the restaurant also offers Paella, there’s a choice between a meat /fish option for £40.00 or vegetarian £30.00. I did intend on trying the Paella but after our tapas didn’t have the room.

Mark and I chatted about what a fantastic venue it is at 1560, discussing a return in the summer or fairer weather to be able to enjoy the experience with the doors open and terrace seating.

We had such a lovely evening and I didn’t want it to end. The surprise dish for us was the Pollo rebozado con miel, we both really enjoyed this. After letting our food go down for a while we opted for a dessert each. There was a choice of three at £8.00 each, with a forth being a selection of Ice cream for £6.00. I opted for the Tarta de quesa, burnt basque cheesecake, raspberries and Mark, Churros con chocolate, we were happy with our choices, Mark’s churros came with 6 large fingers and so enough for two to share in the future I think.

It was a fantastic evening with great service, delicious food, amazing company and a happy heart. I recommend trying for yourselves, I suggest you book first though.

The restaurant is currently open Friday and Saturday evening 6pm – 9pm with a few exceptions so be sure to call 0118 933 4030
