Former Reading FC defender Tom McIntyre has admitted he would “love” to return to the club one day, fuelling speculation among supporters about a possible future reunion.
The 26-year-old centre-back came through Reading’s academy and made more than 150 appearances for the Royals before leaving in January 2024 to join Portsmouth.
After an unsuccessful spell with Pompey, he spent time out on loan at Charlton Athletic and Bradford City before making three appearances for Aberdeen last season.
McIntyre says he still holds a strong affection for the club where he began his professional career.
Speaking about the possibility of returning to Reading in the future, he said: “Of course I’d love to go back to Reading one day.
“But I know how football works, it’s just one of those things that maybe it comes up at some stage.”
McIntyre joined Reading as a youngster and progressed through the club’s youth ranks before making his senior debut in 2017.
Over the following years he became a regular in the first team, earning praise for his versatility, commitment and leadership during a turbulent period in the club’s history.
His departure came amid continued uncertainty off the pitch, with Reading dealing with financial challenges and ownership issues as the hierarchy accepted a nominal fee for him in January 2024 as he moved to Portsmouth.
Since then, the club’s fortunes have begun to improve following a takeover and renewed optimism around the future at the Select Car Leasing Stadium.
While McIntyre stressed that any return would depend on circumstances, his remarks suggest he has not ruled out wearing the blue and white hoops again.
