READING is one of the top ten towns and cities in the UK for foodies, but is more dilute for restaurants than others in Berkshire, new figures show.

Figures released by Solo Female Travelers Tours place Reading in the top 10 for those looking for good food after analysing data from TripAdvisor.

The research considered the number of Michelin-starred restaurants, pubs, and bars, as well as vegetarian and vegan options, online delivery options, table services reviews, and health factors to rank each location.

While London topped the list with perfect scores in a number of categories, Reading placed ninth, just ahead of Leeds.

Edinburgh placed second, Brighton third, Newcastle fourth, and Plymouth fifth, with Bristol, Belfast, and Cardiff taking sixth, seventh, and eighth, respectively.

Reading excelled in vegan-friendly options, with a score of 7.33 out of 10 in that category.

However separate figures from research conducted by Berkshire Rooms show that Reading’s restaurant options are more dilute than in other towns in Berkshire.

Their research also consulted TripAdvisor reviews, and shows that while Reading has more options as the largest town, a smaller proportion of them were rated four stars or above.

A number of Berkshire locations were examined and broken down by categories, with Newbury taking the top spot for ‘Main Course’ towns.

Of all of the towns examined, Reading placed tenth in proportion of highly-rated restaurants, with Hungerford taking the top spot.

While Hungerford only registered 15 restaurants, 14 of them (~93%) were highly rated, followed closely by Eton with 89%.

Newbury ranked third with 76%, Windsor fourth with 74%, and Ascot in fifth with 73%.

Maidenhead, Wokingham, Bracknell, and Woodley ranked from sixth to ninth respectively.

Reading placed 10th, with 59% of its restaurants highly-rated.

The figures showed that the options in Reading dwarfed that of many smaller locations however, with more than double the number of restaurants than any other location.

Of its 473 restaurants, 277 were rated four stars or more.

Reading did better overall for main courses, however, ranking fifth behind Newbury, Hungerford, Maidenhead, and Wokingham, taking first to fourth place respectively.

The Berkshire Rooms survey examined all 1,459 restaurants in Berkshire.
