ORGANISERS of Reading Pride have announced that they are seeking donations amid a funding shortfall.

The team has explained that they are looking for more support just weeks away from the event, which is set to take place in late August.

It comes as a number of Pride events around the country have experienced cancellations and cutbacks as a result of funding and volunteer shortages.

A questionnaire conducted by the UK Pride Organisers Network showed that more than 85 pride networks have seen reductions in corporate sponsorships and partnerships.

The Reading Pride team has explained that the cost of hosting the annual parade and festival is more than £110,000 every year, as well as the work of its volunteer committee.

This year, organisers have seen support from local companies and other organisations halved, which has resulted in a deficit of around £30,000.

As such, organisers have announced that they are appealing for donations on the gate, similar to last year, but that suggested donations have been slightly increased from £3 to £5.

Of last year’s 11,000 attendees, only one in five donated at the gate– increased donation would help Reading Pride achieve its goal of keeping the event accessible and affordable for everyone.

A statement released by Reading Pride trustees explained: “As a donation-led event, we’ve always relied on the generosity of our attendees.

“This year, your support at the gate will make an unprecedented difference. Last year, out of around 11,000 attendees, only about 20% donated £3.

“While we deeply appreciate every contribution, we simply cannot continue without your support.”

It continues: “This year, we’re asking for a £5 donation at the gate, if you are able to give it.

“We truly believe this offers incredible value for a day packed with entertainment, including three stages, a sports area, family entertainment, over 100 stalls, a fairground and a wide array of food and drink options.

“Our goal is to keep Pride accessible and affordable for everyone.”

Reading Pride Parade and Love Unites Festival returns to Kings Meadow on Saturday, August 30.

The team is appealing for support from attendees as well as organisations and businesses.

Donations can be made via the team’s GoFundMe page at: gofundme.com/f/save-reading-pride

Those attending in August can make a donation of £5 on the gates, or buy the Pride Plus package, which includes dedicated seating and shelter.

The event is always seeking volunteers, too; more information via: readingpride.co.uk
