A local woman has “greatly enhanced” the philanthropic efforts of a global technology firm with a base in Reading.

Debor Baldree and Reading Kindness Rocks, the group she runs, have been nominated for Putting Reading on the Map.

Tech company Cisco supports various local charities, including Sue Ryder and the Royal Berkshire Hospital. A nominator said: “These philanthropic efforts have been greatly enhanced by the external dedicated contributions and help of a notable volunteer… Debor Baldree.”

Debor has also been put forward for the Local Hero award.

The nomination added: “Her group’s creations have not only served as a means to raise funds but have also been used to honour and remember loved ones during special events, such as a fundraising walk in Spain.”

She has also been proactive in addressing local causes. She organised events focusing on improving mental health, including workshops teaching the craft of stone painting.

Most recently, Cisco embarked on a fundraising walk along the Camino de Santiago in Spain to help fund a breast screening machine for the Royal Berks Hospital.

“Without hesitation, Debor galvanised her group to prepare hundreds of stones, providing Cisco employees with a unique way to participate in the event by inscribing the names of loved ones on the stones,” said her nominator.

The pebbles were placed along the Camino, symbolising remembrance and support, and were accompanied by a corresponding donation.

“Her actions have not only showcased immense kindness and support but have also made a tangible impact on the mental health and well-being of the local community.”

The Putting Reading on the Map award, sponsored by Jacobs the Jewellers and The Purple Turtle, recognises a group, business or individual who by their commitment and dedication, have raised the profile of our fantastic town in a positive and influential light regionally, nationally or internationally.

The Local Hero award, sponsored by Green Park, celebrates someone who, through a special act of kindness or bravery, has made a positive difference to their community.

Nominations are now open for this year’s Pride of Reading Awards
