A woman who started a local Motor Neurone Disease Association group after the death of her husband from the illness has been dubbed “awesome” for her dedication.
Mary Dodds formed the Reading and West Berks group “many years ago to give people suffering from MND, and their relatives and friends, a chance to meet others in the same boat, as well as providing help, support and comfort in abundance.
“From very humble beginnings the group is now a major part of local MND sufferers’ lives and Mary is at the forefront of everything,” said her nominator for the Community Champion award.
“She is constantly doing work for this amazing charity, always making sure everyone is looked after, arranging events throughout the year to bring in much-needed funding and always with a lovely smile on her face.” they added.
“I’m absolutely in shock,” said a delighted Mary after being handed the award.
“I’m so thrilled and even more thrilled for the awareness of Motor Neurone Disease.
“I’m so delighted that our branch has gone from strength to strength. No one now needs to face it on their own because we are here for them.
“Everyone in our branch has been affected personally by MND in some way.
“We have a dedicated team who are just so brilliant The awareness is at an all time high now.
“We have to get more money for research. In the last 10 years there have been so many improvements and we need that to continue.
