THE UNIVERSITY of Reading Student Union is hosting a ball in aid of charities helping protect people from malaria next month.
The University’s Effective Altruism Society has partnered with the Swing Dancing Society
and Ballroom and Latin Society to work with the Against Malaria Foundation for the event.
The evening will feature live dance performances and music, creating what organisers hope will be an annual tradition of community celebration and charitable giving.
The Against Malaria Foundation is rated as one of the world’s most effective charities by independent evaluator GiveWell, aimed at making sure donations have the best chance to save the most lives.
Karan Ruparell, PhD researcher in Machine Learning Hydrology, who is leading the event, said: “A lot of us don’t feel like we can make a difference. A long-lasting insecticide net costs about the same as a bottle of Coke, and reduces the risk of malaria for a whole family for a couple years.
Your £25 ticket gets you a great night out and protects sixteen families–that’s huge.”
The Uni of Reading Students Union Charity Ball takes place a 3Sixty from 5pm on Wednesday, November 21.
