READING remains a ‘little big town’ as it has missed out on city status in favour of Milton Keynes.
The Cabinet Office today announced the Thames Valley near neighbour as one of eight towns that will receive a Platinum Jubilee boost.
Reading Borough Council leader Jason Brock said that the decision was “hugely disappointing” for the town.
The eight include Stanley, which is the capital of the Falklands Islands, as well as Douglas on the Isle of Man, and Bangor in Northern Ireland.
Also on the list are Colchester, Doncaster, Dunfermline, and Wrexham.
This is not the first jubilee that Reading has applied for city status, having its bid at the golden jubilee turned down as well.
Cllr Brock said: “As we said from the outset, this bid was about showcasing Reading, everything it has to offer and everything we love about it, from our rich history, our Royal connections, our diversity, our cultural scene and our economy, which drives the whole region.
“We firmly believe our bid was a strong one, and today’s result doesn’t change any of the things which make us proud of Reading.”
He sent his congratulations to all towns that have won city status.
“Reading will, for now, remain a ‘little big town’ just as it’s always been, something that sets us apart and we remain hugely proud of,” Cllr Brock added.
“Plus, after too many heart-in-mouth moments, we’ve still got Championship football in Reading next year, so that’s a bonus.”
