READING is set to mark Transgender Day of Remembrance with two separate events following Transgender Awareness Week.
Reading Pride’s MyUmbrella LGBT+ project is holding the annual vigil which celebrates diversity and advocates for LGBTQ+, especially trans, rights.
It also acknowledges and pays tribute to all of the trans lives lost to hate-related violence, which includes the disproportionately high number of trans women of colour who are subject to often fatal abuse.
This year’s events will mark the day with a vigil and film presentation, where a number of representatives from charities and support organisations will speak, as well as those affected by trans rights issues from Berkshire and further afield.
It will also include a list of all of the trans lives lost to abuse and hate-related violence since last year’s vigil.
This year, a public showing of the film is taking place at Reading Biscuit Factory, followed by a showing at Reading University the following day.
TDoR was founded in 1999 by transgender advocate Gwendolyn Ann Smith to memorialise Rita Hester, a transgender woman who was murdered in Massachusetts in 1998.
Reading’s first TDoR vigil was held in 2015.
Transgender Awareness Week takes place from Monday, November 13, to Sunday, November 19.
The Transgender Day of Remembrance vigil will take place from on 6pm Sunday, November 19, at Reading Biscuit Factory.
The film will also be shown at 3Sixty, Reading Students’ Union, from 7pm on Monday, November 20.
The film will be available on YouTube from 8pm on Monday, November 20.
