Reading FC manager Leam Richardson has criticised a challenge during his side’s 1–1 draw with Bolton Wanderers that left defender Paudie O’Connor requiring stitches.
The Sky Bet League One fixture at the Select Car Leasing Stadium saw Reading take the lead through Jack Marriott, but goals in added time from Mason Burstow earned Bolton a late leveller.
However, post-match attention was focused on a second-half incident involving Bolton forward Johnny Kenny, who appeared to clip O’Connor in the face while competing for the ball.
Richardson described the challenge as “disgusting” and said the defender had suffered facial injuries, including damage to his teeth, and was undergoing treatment after the game. He also questioned the officiating for not issuing any further punishment.
“It’s a terrible one, it’s an absolute terrible one, disgusting,” Richardson said. “He’s getting stitched as we speak, his teeth have suffered.”
Despite dominating possession for large periods of the match, Bolton were unable to find a breakthrough until deep into stoppage time, when Burstow struck to snatch a point.
Reading remain in mid-table, with Richardson adding that his players were “absolutely gutted” to concede so late after a spirited performance.
Both clubs are expected to receive enquiries from the Football Association following the late-game challenge.
