READING’S Plasma Donation Centre is moving following the announcement that its premises on Kings Road are set to become flats.
Earlier this month it was announced that The Delta Building would be converted into flats after owners London Two won permission to make the change.
Reading Borough Council granted a submitted planning application, subject to conditions, meaning the project now looks set to go forward.
As a result, the Blood Plasma Donation Centre at the site is undergoing a move to temporary premises in Reading Bridge House, George Street.
Following the move, the new temporary site will begin taking bookings for donations from Wednesday, June 25.
The new premises are currently taking bookings for donations until October, but no confirmation of a new permanent site has yet been made.
It comes two years after the site saw an expansion and refurbishment, which increased its capacity by a further 33% through new chairs and fittings and screening booths.
Reading has one of three plasma donation centres in the UK, the donations from which are used to make lifesaving medicines which can treat more than 50 diseases, and there are only three plasma donation centres in England.
Plasma is rich in antibodies which are used to create medicines such as immunoglobulin, which can be used to treat around 50 different conditions.
Most of the conditions centre on immunodeficiencies, such as multifocal motor neuropathy and auto-immune encephalitis.
