The RSPCA is appealing for information after a hamster was found abandoned in a cage near some bins in Berkshire.
The small animal was discovered by a member of the public in Slough on 18 August 2025 at approximately 8.30am.
The hamster was inside a pink cage, left outside near bins. The caller took the hamster and its cage home to keep it safe.
Animal Rescue Officer Vanessa Taylor, who attended the initial report, said: “We are concerned about this case of a hamster being abandoned outdoors. Leaving small pets unattended in this way puts them at serious risk.
“Anyone with information about who may have left the hamster should come forward.”
The identity of the person who abandoned the animal is unknown, and no one came forward to claim the pet. The hamster, named Nibbles, was taken into the care of RSPCA Blackberry Farm Animal Centre and has now been happily rehomed.
Anyone with information is asked to contact the RSPCA appeals line on 0300 123 8018 and refer to incident number 1608929.
Across the whole of 2024, there were 22,503 incidents about abandoned animals, equating to an average of more than 61 incidents every single day of the year.
The RSPCA fears a surge in pet ownership during the Covid-19 lockdown and the increasing financial hardships due to soaring living costs have led to the increase in people dumping their pets.
For those who are struggling, we urge them to reach out for help and encourage others to really do their research into whether they can manage all the commitments before taking on a pet.
When an animal is in need, the quicker they get help the better. There may be times when you can help get a sick, injured, abandoned or trapped animal quickly by taking them directly to a vet, rehabilitation centre or rescue centre.
