The MET Office has issued a Red weather warning across much of the UK, with extreme heat to be expected early next week.
With an Amber warning already issued for Sunday, July 17, the announcement warns of an “exceptional hot spell” expected on Monday and Tuesday, July 18-19.
Temperatures are currently expected to hit highs of 35` in Reading, though some parts of the country, such as London, are expecting highs of 37.
The warning covers London, parts of the southeast and the Midlands, extending as far as Manchester and Hull.
The warning is issued as a result of “population-wide adverse health effects” which could be caused by the heat, as well as a significant increase in numbers of people visiting coastal areas, lakes, and rivers.
It also recommends that “substantial changes in working practises and daily routine” are likely to be required.
The warning comes shortly after a Level 4 Heat-Health Alert was issued across England, warning people to look out for vulnerable neighbours and loved ones who could suffer adverse effects from the heat.
People are advised to drink plenty of fluids and avoid excess alcohol, and to look out for signs of heat related illness.
