IT WAS a real Roy of the Rovers moment: former Reading FC star striker Dave Kitson bagged a brace on his return to the pitch.

To mark Sunday League Day, the member of the Royals record-breaking 106 team netted a stoppage time equaliser when he turned out for Caversham United on Sunday, March 24.

It was his first game for the side – a Reading Sunday League Division 2 clash against Rose & Thistle at Mapledurham Playing Fields.

The 44-year-old was Reading’s top scorer in their record-breaking 106-point title winning season in the Championship and scored the club’s first ever Premier League goal. He was making his first competitive appearance for 10 years.

Kitson’s near post volley from a long throw gave Caversham the lead in the first half.

Rose & Thistle hit back to lead 2-1, but Kitson headed home four minutes into stoppage time to rescue a point.

Around 200 people turned out to watch the game, which saw Caversham United raise money for Prostate Cancer UK.

Kitson, who took the morning off from coaching duties for The Dave Kitson Academy, is the latest former Reading player to have played in the Reading & District Sunday League.

Other ex-Royals to have played in the town’s Sunday League include Neil Webb, Stuart Beavon, Neville Roach and Barry Hunter.
