READING residents will be treated to a day of cultural celebration as a community event returns for the eighth time, but at a new venue.
Kenyans in Reading Family Funday will recognise the town’s diversity through traditional cuisine, activities and competitions for visitors of all ages to get involved with at Rivers Ibis Club, Scours Lane.
Everyone is welcome to attend the event which marks the end of summer.
Organiser Ken Gathere said: “Preparations are going well. This time, we are even more well-prepared than before. Last year’s event was still a little uncertain because of Covid, but we’ve had a positive response from local companies, people and have so many activities available.
“It’s going to be a day full of fun with sports and stalls catered more for the kids. We always say if we can win the hearts and minds of the parents, we can take care of the kids.
“All in all, we can’t wait. The event is open to all. We can’t wait, we’ve just got our fingers and toes crossed for the weather.”
The group’s inaugural funday took place in 2014, after Mr Gathere’s mother died. Overwhelmed by support, he looked to thank everyone but could not invite everyone to his home.
Mr Gathere decided to hold an open gathering at Winnersh Community Centre instead and the event has since grown year on year, with almost 1000 people attending in 2022.
Building links within the community will once again be the theme of the day, with visitors encouraged to meet new people through team competitions and activities.
There will be netball, pool, table tennis, volleyball, football and running tournaments taking place throughout the afternoon, with teams allocated by organisers to promote mingling.
With children eating for free, they’ll be able to take advantage of the various food stalls on site, as well as tug of war, a Reading’s Got Talent competition and a selection of three bouncy castles.
Representatives from the Royal Berkshire Hospital’s MEET PEET community team will also be available to conduct free health checks for visitors.
Having been held at Bearwood Recreation Ground in previous years, organisers are keen to ensure that ardent attendees arrive at the right location on the day.
Due to limited parking spaces at the Ibis Club, visitors are advised to arrive early, car-share or take lifts wherever possible.
Tickets are £5 for adults and £2 for children and can be paid for on the day.
The fun day takes place from noon-9pm on Saturday, August 5.
