On Saturday, Reading Hongkongers teamed up with the Hong Kong Business Hub to mark the start of the Lunar New Year – the year of the dragon.
They organised a special fair held at The Wren School, off Bath Road.
The event was a showcase the cultural tapestry of Hong Kong and other Asian cultures, offering a blend of food, crafts, arts, and entertainment.
Organisers said that while different cultures mark the new year in different ways, the event had food and traditions that symbolise prosperity, abundance and togetherness.
In Hong Kong, one tradition is akin to Christmas shopping: a Lunar New Year Fair before the festival, giving people a chance to purchase items such as food and decorations, while getting the celebrations started.
Last weekend’s event included food stalls, an artisan market, live entertainment, workshops and activities.
There were opportunities to learn balloon twisting, have a massage, try calligraphy, and enjoy K-pop dance workshops.
It is not the only celebration of the Lunar New Year that Reading will enjoy.
This Sunday, Reading Chinese School, in partnership with Reading Borough Council, BID, schools and communities, will hold a celebration event in the town hall, from 10.30am to 3.30pm.
Activities include traditional Chinese Workshops, with an outdoor dance, and, at 1pm, a performance in the Concert Hall.
Tickets are £10 in advance, £12.50 on the day, while workshops are free.
