A Berkshire care home has brought festive cheer to its local community with a special Christmas Grotto, raising funds for children’s charity Make-A-Wish Foundation UK.
Shinfield View, part of Berkley Care Group, welcomed residents, families, and children from the area to enjoy a magical afternoon in the home’s library. Twinkling lights, a festive backdrop, and a roaring fire created a cosy setting for visits with Father Christmas.
Children were greeted with a “magic light” test to see if they had made the good list, with all leaving the grotto with an early Christmas present. While waiting, youngsters enjoyed colouring activities in the Bistro, and guests were offered mulled wine, hot chocolate, mince pies, and cookies.

The event, free to attend, encouraged voluntary donations with all proceeds supporting Shinfield View’s Big Christmas Cycle fundraiser. So far, staff have collectively cycled nearly 100 miles to raise money for Make-A-Wish Foundation.
Adding to the festive spirit, staff member Tammy knitted 35 miniature Christmas stockings, which were hung on the tree and filled with chocolate coins as a surprise for the children. Neil, who played Father Christmas, brought an extra personal touch—his father is a resident at the home.
Laura McSoley, Events Manager at Shinfield View, said:”The look on the young children’s faces when they went into the grotto was priceless. It was a magical experience for staff, residents and attendees alike. Moments like these really capture the heart of the festive season, and it’s a joy for us to bring residents and the wider community together in celebration.”
