BILL Donne has been has been commended after two decades of service to Reading’s night-time economy.

Mr Donne, honorary secretary of Reading Pubwatch, was bestowed the National Pubwatch Award of Merit–sponsored by Licensing Connect–for his leading role over the last 20-years in supporting and educating venue operators.

An Award of Merit recognises individuals that have contributed to the success of Pubwatch schemes around the country.

National Pubwatch is a voluntary organisation which supports over 800 Pubwatch schemes across the UK, and works to promote safe, secure and social drinking environments in all licensed premises throughout the UK.

Bill has many years of experience as a venue owner and designated premises supervisor, as well as running a successful licensing consultancy business.

Bill was also a member of the National Pubwatch Committee for 7 years and a former Board director of accreditation scheme Best Bar None. He is currently the NTIA (Night Time Industries Association) ambassador for Berkshire and is also chairman of Wokingham Pubwatch.

He has also been involved in the setting up of various suburban Pubwatch schemes including West Reading, Tilehurst and South East Reading.

It is through his commitment and efforts that Reading Pubwatch has maintained a strong presence in the town centre for over 20 years, working to provide effective partnership between stakeholders, crime reduction initiatives, and training opportunities for venue operators which have reduced violent and anti-social behaviour.

Bill was recognised as being instrumental in bringing together the stakeholders and agencies that have been critical to ensuring a safe night-time economy.

Reading Pubwatch was recognised by National Pubwatch in 2022 when it was awarded the Pubwatch of the Year.

Mr Donne said: “I am delighted and honoured to be recognised for the work in Reading, which has made the town a safer place to socialise.

“It has all been about partnership working and ensuring that people can come out in Reading and enjoy themselves safely–to be recognised by my peers in the industry is a great accolade.”

National Pubwatch chair Steve Baker OBE said: “Congratulations to Bill for winning the Award of Merit.

“He is an inspiration to other pubwatches and shows what can be achieved if someone has the commitment and drive to work in partnership with other stakeholders.”
