A FORMER landfill site near Newbury has been green-lit for a new solar farm.
A plot which used to house landfill for the Thames Valley-based Grundon Waste Management has moved one step closer to housing a green energy project in Beenham.
West Berkshire District Council has approved plans that would see a solar farm built on the site near Beenham Industrial Estate.
The site, which covers more than four acres, would generate enough energy to power more than 420 homes, an equivalent carbon offset of nearly 400 tonnes per year.
It would join a number of green energy projects for Grundon, just under 75% of whose operation is already powered by renewable energy.
The completed site would mean that the company’s projects in Beenham would be completely powered by renewable energy.
Plans would see a solar panel array installed alongside an energy storage system as well as landscaping to introduce biodiversity to the site.
