Woodley United Ladies maintained their winning ways with a third successive win and third successive clean sheet by beating Eversley & California Ladies.

They now sit level on points and goal difference with second place Penn & Tylers Green but a position below them by virtue of fewer goals scored.

Despite the second goal coming in second half stoppage time this was a comfortable win for Woodley, with the visitors offering very little goal threat and their best chance coming in the 19th minute to level the score, but the shot was pulled wide of Sophie Measham’s right hand goal post.

United thought they had taken the lead in the 10th minute. Ellen Surtees took a short corner, received the ball back and crossed into the visitors’ penalty area where Clara Stringer saw her headed goal disallowed for offside.

Not to be discouraged, Woodley continued to be a threat through a combination of good passing and forward running by May Hamblin, Amie Benton and Lucy Routledge.

The opening goal came in the 21st minute when Maddie Sawyer was allowed time and space to shoot twenty five yards from the left hand side of the pitch into the top right hand corner of Eversley’s goal.

A combination of good goalkeeping by the visitors Teri Harfield-Brown and balls into the Eversley’s penalty area narrowly over running the Woodley forwards saw Sawyer’s effort the only goal of the first half.

The second half followed much the same as the first with Woodley continuing to attack with stand in right back and player of the match Sarah Lawrence and left back Hollie Wilkins enjoying getting forward and supplying crosses into the opponents’ penalty area.

The decisive second goal came in the first minute of second half stoppage time when Hamblin was one on one with Harfield-Brown and saw her shot squirm under the keepers’ body.

Penn & Tylers visit The Pavilion this coming Sunday, November 27 in Woodley’s next test.

Woodley United: Measham, Lawrence, Wilkins, Stringer, Surtees, Evans, Benton, Sawyer, Hamblin, Messitt, Routledge (Slann)
