AS THE nation prepares for the rise in the energy price cap to £2,500 on October 1, police are warning people to be alert to scammers.
Every household is to receive a £400 rebate which will appear on their bills in £60 instalments over the autumn and winter. No action is necessary as the energy company will automatically action the funds.
But scammers have been sending text messages claiming to be from energy regulator Ofgem.
The message invites victims to apply for the rebate and follow a link to a fake Ofgem website to then provide personal details and set up a direct debit to receive the rebate.
For those with older prepayment meters, energy bill discount vouchers will be send in the first week of each month from October, via SMS text, email or post, which can then be redeemed at top-up points.
In all cases, no bank details are needed at any point.
