VIRTUAL candles will be lit at Reading’s railway station today to remember victims of holocaust.
Great Western Railway and Network Rail are teaming up to take part in the Light the Darkness initiative to mark Holocaust Memorial Day
The main focal point for the commemorations will be Paddington Station. At 8pm, it will be illuminated in purple light, and information screens will be changed to show lit candles.
The aim is to allow passengers and rail staff the opportunity to pause and reflect as they travel or work.
GWR will display the candles on its screens across its network, including Reading. Also taking part will be Bridgwater, Didcot Parkway, Exeter St Davids, Maidenhead, Oxford, Slough, Swindon, Taunton and Westbury stations.
Holocaust Memorial Day is marked each year on January 27th, falling on the anniversary of the of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest Nazi death camp, in 1945.
This year, the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust’s (HMDT) campaign is Light the Darkness.
HMDT encourages people across the country to join in the national moment by safely displaying a lit candle in their windows, to remember and show their support for those impacted by all forms of hatred and persecution.
Pictures of the candles can be shared on social media, tagging HMDT on Twitter (@HMD_UK), Facebook (HMD.UK) or Instagram (@holocaustmemorialdaytrust), and by using the hashtags #HolocaustMemorialDay and #LightTheDarkness.
