The University of Reading is seeking two local residents to join its Community Engagement Steering Group, to help improve the way the University works with the local community.
The Steering Group is chaired by the University Vice-Chancellor, Professor Robert Van de Noort, and also includes University of Reading and Reading Students’ Union members of staff.
Since its launch two years ago, the steering group has met three times each academic year to provide strategic oversight of community engagement activity at the university.
Andrea Malcolm and Hiral Patel have been members of the Community Engagement Steering Group since September 2023, during which they have been “instrumental” in making University campuses and venues more open and accessible.
They also worked to design the champions network, which helps the university connect better to the community.
Andrea has a long-standing connection with the area around the University of Reading, where she has lived and worked for much of her life. Her involvement with the Steering Group reflects her commitment to strengthening community ties.
Andrea said: “I wanted to make a positive difference where I live. Being part of the Steering Group allowed me to support community-focused events and projects that promote partnership, awareness, and local opportunities.”
Hiral studied and worked as an academic at the University in the School of Built Environment, and lives in Earley, Wokingham.
Hiral said: “I joined the Steering Group to strengthen the partnership between local communities and the University, motivated by my deep connection to both.
“Over two years, we achieved strategic, effective, and action-oriented outcomes.
“The Steering Group acts as a platform for positive change through open dialogue, founded on commitment, respect, and the courage to do things differently.”
Professor Van de Noort said: “A key part of our University Strategy is to be engaged with our local community. This means working in partnership with local residents to understand how we as a University can best serve our community.
“Our Community Engagement Steering Group was first launched two years ago and has been a fantastic way to ensure voices at all levels are represented, helping to shape our work with the community beyond campus.
“I would like to personally thank Andrea and Hiral, who have been our local members for the last two years. Their time, energy and dedication to the role has been hugely appreciated.
“We look forward to working with our two new local members over the coming academic year.”
No previous knowledge or experience of being part of a Steering Group or working with the University is required.
However, strong local connections, a good knowledge of the area and the issues being faced are sought.
Those interested in joining the Steering Group are invited to submit their expressions of interest by Friday, June 27.
This can be done by filling out a short form, where more information is available about the role and the dates for future in-person steering group meetings.
