The unconditional love and huge support a couple have shown to their extended family after the sudden death of their daughter has led to them being nominated for the Family of the Year in this year’s Pride of Reading Awards.

A nominator told how in July last year Denise and Nigel Kmiecik received a terrible phone call to say their daughter Rachel has unexpectedly passed away.

Rachel was a twin to sister Louise and the Kmieciks also have a son David and nine grandchildren.

Their nominator said of the couple: “I know about all the hard work they put in to help their family and keep it together (although I know they don’t feel that it is work).

“I feel that they really need to be recognised for the unconditional, love, support and kindness they give to the whole family.

“Over the months, they have continued to be the tower of strength for the whole family. They have always been an active part of their grandchildren’s life and love being so.”

She added the pair help daily with all their grandchildren’s childcare, but with the extra pressure and responsibility of taken care of Rachel’s two youngest children on a more regular basis.

“Nothing is too much for their family. On top of the grieving, and all the daily extra responsibility, they both have their own health issues.

“I just want them both to be recognised and appreciated for the unconditional love and support they are doing while going through so much … to be recognised for the truly wonderful parents/people they are,” she said.

The award, sponsored by De Vere Wokefield Estate, celebrates a Reading family who through showing each other love, support, respect and kindness deserve special recognition as Family of the Year.
