If you’ve lived in Reading for a while chances are you’ll have been to the Calcot hotel in the past to enjoy one of their disco dinner evenings or a meal.
There was a time they were closed for business but they are back open and offering a Sunday Carvery from 12.30 – 3.30.
My family and I don’t often go out for roast dinners on Sundays and if we have we’ve normally gone to a Toby carvery, the only trouble with that is you have to wait an age to get a table and then queue again to fill your plate.
On Father’s Day we decided to take a trip down to the recently reopened Calcot Hotel and it did not disappoint.
The barman greeted us and showed us to our table, we had the pick of the restaurant, which was great and so choose a round table for the five of us, I really like round tables, I find them so much more sociable.
The restaurant was a good sized space, with plenty of room between them, it felt really private which we appreciated.
We were welcomed by our waitress and ordered some drinks and directed to go and help ourselves to the food when we were ready.
The restaurant had cooked a selection of meats, beef, pork and turkey with stuffing balls, Yorkshire puddings and crackling alongside some roasted potatoes, roasted carrots and onions, broccoli, cauliflower, peas, roasted parsnips and gravy.
I opted for some roasted beef, Yorkshire pudding, stuffing, crackling because it’s the only time I ever get any, and lots of vegetables.
Between us we had different meats and the consensus around the table was all really positive.
One of the most important parts of the roast dinner to me is the roast potatoes, they were good, crispy on the outside with a soft centre.
The vegetables were cooked well, not over cooked which you can find some places and were being replenished regularly as the restaurant filled up.
The atmosphere was calm and quiet with the faint chatter of conversation in the background.
The Sunday Carvery is £18 for two courses and on the menu was a choice of three puddings. We didn’t all want a pudding having filled our belly’s with the main.
One disappointment was that two of the three desserts weren’t available to order, we really wanted to try the biscoff cheesecake from the menu however, the alternate more than made up for it with a sticky toffee pudding, one of my favourite desserts.
In summary we had a lovely meal and really enjoyed our time at The Calcot Hotel, and the guest of honour was happy and that’s really all that mattered.
