Reading has been highlighted as one of England’s most underrated county towns in a list published by The Telegraph.
The national newspaper ranked towns across the country that it says offer plenty to visitors and residents alike, but often don’t get wider recognition.
According to the list, Reading stands out for its blend of history, culture and modern amenities. As one of the largest urban areas in England without city status, the town is known for its strategic location on the River Thames and strong transport links to London and the rest of the UK.
Reading also has a rich heritage, including the ruins of Reading Abbey, a medieval monastery founded in the 12th century, and a growing cultural scene. It is home to major events such as the annual Reading Festival and a wide range of shopping, arts and leisure attractions.
Supporters of the town say that despite its size and range of offerings, it is often overlooked in favour of higher‑profile destinations, an oversight reflected in The Telegraph’s “underrated” ranking.
The full list of towns and the reasons for their selection were published in The Telegraph’s travel section earlier this month.
