Reading Football Club’s owner Rob Couhig has announced plans to invest £5 million into improving the club’s stadium, with a series of upgrades aimed at enhancing the matchday experience for supporters.
Couhig revealed the funding package will be used to modernise the Select Car Leasing Stadium, including work on the playing surface, fan facilities and overall infrastructure.
Among the proposed changes is the installation of a new pitch, which is expected to significantly improve playing conditions. The plans also include the introduction of safe standing areas and the development of a fan village to create a more vibrant atmosphere on matchdays.
Further improvements are set to include upgraded floodlights, which could be synchronised with music as part of a more modern entertainment experience, as well as new LED advertising boards aimed at reducing long-term running costs.
Supporter facilities are also due to benefit, with refurbishment of bathrooms forming part of the wider overhaul.
Mr Couhig said the investment forms part of a longer-term strategy to maximise the stadium’s use beyond matchdays, with ambitions to host concerts and other events throughout the year.
The stadium currently costs around £2.5 million annually to operate, and the club hopes increased usage will help improve financial sustainability.
The owner added that the redevelopment plans will go ahead regardless of the club’s league position, underlining a commitment to improving facilities and rebuilding for the future.
