Reading Football Club’s takeover saga has been a long and tortuous process for everyone involved. Most of all the fans – they deserve so much better and now hopefully have good times ahead to look forward to.
Finally the nonsense is over. No more protests. No more tennis balls. No more clown costumes. No more placards. No more pitch protests. No more nonsensical rumours. No more points deductions. No more transfer embargoes. No more EFL statements. No more empty promises. Dai Yongge’s reign of terror has been consigned to history.
No one’s expecting Rob Couhig and Todd Trossclair to come in and change the club overnight. There are issues still to be ironed out but the most important thing is that Reading fans can have hope again. They can sleep soundly knowing that they will have a club to support for the future – something that no football fan should have to be concerned about.
After Dai’s reckless spending in his first few years to his refusal to fund anything in the final few, no one is asking for Couhig to splash tens of millions in hope of getting the club back to the promised land.
All fans are asking for is stability and it appears that’s what is going to be delivered if Couhig’s early musings are anything to go by. Reading will finally be able to operate properly in the transfer market this summer after years of transfer embargoes which will allow Brian Carey a much wider pool of players to pick from.
Reading did manage to make more than a few astute signings despite being restricted over the past two summer windows – including Lewis Wing, Harvey Knibbs, Charlie Savage, Joel Pereira and Tyler Bindon all arriving to Berkshire.
One of the priorities for this summer will be holding on to the players who managed to make it such a memorable campaign on the field – missing out on the play-offs by just one place.
On the face of things there’s no apparent reason why any key member of this group should want to move on – they’re a club that’s finally building something. A team full of talent and more than capable of another play-off push, especially with some reinforcements this summer.
There’s no guarantee of a bright future, but it’s certainly safe to say it will be brighter than the past couple of years. Reading fans have shown what an incredibly passionate and engaged fanbase they are. The club has all the tools available at its disposal to build something special. There’s no doubt that Reading will be a very attractive club for many players who will be on the move this summer. Reading’s golden era under Sir John Madejski, Steve Coppell and then Brian McDermott were also renowned for acting shrewdly and smartly in the transfer window. Let’s hope that tradition returns under Couhig’s ownership.
Supporting your football club is all about optimism and hope. Reading fans have put up with the absolute worst and have finally come out on the other side. Who knows what the future holds – but why not dare to dream the impossible dream?
