READING CITY climbed their way up the table with an impressive second-half showing to see off Wembley in the Combined Counties Premier North.

The Cityzens pushed hard to find a breakthrough and had to be patient to work an opening.

Wembley’s resolve was eventually broken just before half-time when Phil Veal was on the end of Josh Baines’ free-kick.

The Cityzens made their lead more comfortable early in the second-half when Eddie Lee doubled the advantage.

City were firmly in the driving seat when they found a third goal of the afternoon. Dan Warre put the hosts three goals in front just after the hour mark when he latched onto a deflection and squeezed the ball past the keeper from a tight angle.

With the game already put to bed and the points safely in the bag, Reading helped themself to another goal a minute before the end of the 90 when Baines’ corner delivery found Ellis Cowd to convert for the final goal of the game.

Reading City manager Simon Johnson said: “A really good performance today in tough conditions. We had a bit of a reset after last week about the way that we play and the boys did wonders. They really brought into it and a clean sheet, which we haven’t had for a while.

“We asked them to show a bit of desire out of possession, how much it meant to them and we saw that in abundance. Loads of good blocks near the end to maintain the clean sheet even though we had already scored four.”

Assistant manager Mark Butcher added: “We looked like our old selves today (Saturday), went back to basics a bit and got our set pieces in and our shape right.

“The work ethic was there, we believed in ourselves and believed in the things that have made us successful over the last couple of years. We were a better version of ourselves than we were last weekend and hopefully will be moving forward.”

Reading City: York, Thomson-Wheeler, Donville, Valentin, Veal, Coed, Baines (c), Pilling, Lee, Warre, Richardson

Subs: Bourne, Bangura, Lazarczuk, Stokes

Goals: Veal 39’, Lee 52’, Warre 63’, Cowd 89’
