Dvorak’s first full-length cantata, Stabat Mater, will be performed by Reading Bach Choir for its spring concert.

The text details the suffering of Mary at the foot of the cross of Jesus, and was initially prompted by the death of the composer’s infant daughter. It is a perfect piece of music for the Christian period of Lent.

The choir will be joined by soloists from Genesis Sixteen, the young artists’ programme of The Sixteen and supported by Assistant Music Director Nicholas Shaw at the piano.

It takes place from 7.30pm on Saturday, March 16 at the church of St Thomas of Canterbury in Goring. Tickets cost £15, or £5 for under 18s.
