The Green Community Award, Tolhurst Organic, sponsor Tomato Energy
An organic vegetable farm that produces food without the use of livestock has been nominated for the The Green Community Award.
“The food produced there is the product of an entire journey,” said its nominator. “The journey is one which deeply involves many people who go there, creating a model for ‘stockfree organic’ farming.
“It supports an idyllic rural lifestyle and provides soul food for those who work here and good food for themselves and their families.”
The aim is not to supply every family in the south, said the nominator, but to farm with an emphasis on education and conservation. The farm delivers vegetable and fruit boxes around neighbourhoods.
“Their farming system not only helps to minimise harmful effects on the environment but feeds you and your families as well,” they added.
‘Iain Tolhurst saw a big future in stockfree organic systems as they use considerably less land than livestock dependent systems, have a much lower carbon footprint and lower energy requirements.
“He was at the forefront of developing this important food growing system,” they said.
One of the longest running organic farms in the country, they have been looking after food and land for 40 years, said the nominator. Their organic certification with the Soil Association began in 1976.
The Green Community Award is sponsored by Tomato Energy which aims to supply affordable, sustainable energy for any lifestyle.
