Charity of the Year, Reading Lions Club, sponsor Roc Search
A charity entering its 60th year saves lives by offering free prostate cancer screening to around 1,000 men each year.
Reading Lions has been actively serving the community of Reading since 1965 and has excelled in supporting those in need, added its nominator for the Charity of the Year award.
The club is run by volunteers whose objective is to serve the local community and make a positive difference, they said.
It runs various fundraising events throughout the year, notably annual Santa visits to local streets and venues at Christmas, plus a Golf Day and, until recently, a fireworks display, said another nominator. It also supports local children’s charities,
“With the money raised they support local people who approach them with specific requests for help and small local groups/charities,” they said.
The club collects and delivers donations for local food banks and runs an annual event offering free prostate cancer tests for around one thousand local men.
It keeps the town centre County Lock tidy and supports other local charities, volunteering for the Poppy and Marie Curie collections and Walk for Wards events “to name just a few”.
The Charity of the Year award is sponsored by Reading-based international recruitment company Roc Search. Reading Lions Club has also been nominated for Community of the Year sponsored by Hilton Reading.
