Nylon Hair Artists were put forward for an award in recognition of their “unwavering commitment to Reading’s local community and their passion for supporting fellow small businesses,” say their nominator.

“More than just a hair salon, Nylon is a creative and collaborative hub that champions local talent and independent enterprise,” they added.

“They regularly feature the work of local artists through a rotating art wall, in partnership with arts charity Jelly, turning their space into a vibrant mini gallery that gives visibility and support to creatives in Reading.”

A nominator said: “Their community spirit goes far beyond the salon walls.

“Nylon has created and maintains a WhatsApp network connecting independent businesses across Reading.

“This invaluable group allows small business owners to share advice, services, and support, whether it’s finding a trusted plumber, sharing equipment, sourcing insurance, or even planning a night out.”

They also use their social media reach to amplify others. They have spearheaded collaborative Instagram giveaways and initiatives like a Twelve Days of Christmas advent calendar, spotlighting a different local business each day to boost visibility and encourage residents to shop local during the festive season.

Sustainability is also central to Nylon’s ethos, said their nominator. “They regularly share ideas and strategies for more environmentally responsible practices.

“Nylon exemplifies what it means to be an independent retailer at the heart of their community; generous, innovative, and deeply rooted in local collaboration. They are not only building a successful business but actively uplifting others along the way.”

After winning the award, founder of Nylon Hair, Claire Higgs said: “Our team are going to be blown away that we’ve won this. They bring joy to our salon every single day. We were very shocked to even be nominated.

“It was so emotional seeing it all up on the screen. It’s been such a humbling experience to see all of the other nominees and winners.

“We’re so proud to accept this award on behalf of all the other Reading independents who do such a great job. We’re such a close knit community, we all look out and help each other. It’s so nice to have that in Reading.”

A global leader in sustainable engineering, environmental consulting and design, Stantec Reading’s staff have for two years been volunteering their time and energy to help care for and maintain Forbury Gardens, one of Reading’s most cherished green spaces.

Stantec “exemplifies what it means to be a business truly embedded in and committed to its community,” said a nominator.

Stantec works closely with the head  gardener to coordinate the initiative and their team has consistently shown up to support the upkeep of the park through gardening and tidying sessions.

“Their efforts have directly contributed to keeping the Forbury Gardens looking its best – ensuring it remains a welcoming and beautiful space for community members to enjoy and ready to host a wide range of local events,” said their nominator.

“What makes this initiative so special is the consistency and spirit of service behind it.

“Stantec’s commitment goes beyond a one-off gesture; it’s an ongoing partnership with the community that demonstrates genuine care for the people and the place.

“Their volunteers have given time, effort and heart to a space that matters deeply to the people of Reading.”

As a global leader in sustainable engineering, environmental consulting, and design, Stantec is driven by a vision to improve the quality of life in communities. “But here in Reading, they’ve shown that vision in action – not just through their professional work, but through real, hands-on community service,” they said.

“It’s absolutely amazing to win this award, and it reflects the incredible work our teams do,” said Scott.

“As a design and engineering consultancy, our mission is to design with community in mind.

“Wherever we’re based in the world, we want to put something back into the community.

“We’ve been in Reading for 50 years and have a series of ongoing events, but our Stantec In The Community Week really gives our teams a chance to shine.

“Florine is a fantastic example of that, supporting a massive amount of work in Forbury Gardens this year.

“I was born here, and have a lifelong commitment to Reading, it’s in my DNA.”

Florine has lived in Reading for eight years, enjoys living and working here, and feels that there is a strong sense of community.

She said: “It’s good to see what’s happening locally and, to be involved, through Stantec, in some of the projects going on in the town.

“I’d like to say a big thank you to the social committee team for setting up the relationship with head gardener Roland at Forbury Gardens, and for organising the week.”

Scott continued: “And a huge thank you to Roland, too, for nominating us.

“He does a fantastic job.

“We’ll take the award back to the office and make sure that everyone involved is recognised.

“And we look forward to doing more next year.”
