A young man leapt into action when his father was taken ill to take over the running of a popular community carnival which has been going since 1960.
Matthew Jacobs has now been nominated for the Community Champion award, sponsored by Reading Football Club.
His nominator said: “Matthew took over running the Woodley Carnival as head volunteer when his dad became sick.
“Matt is in his early twenties and volunteers a lot of his time to organise the day and night event attended by thousands of people.
“He is ambitious for what the event can achieve and how it can bring the community together whilst remaining calm under pressure. He manages a large team of volunteers, who are a lot older than him, with poise and determination,” they added.
Woodley Community Carnival attracts over 7,000 people across the afternoon carnival and evening concert in June each year.
The afternoon offers stalls, performances, displays and free attractions, and the evening concert, which features local bands, ends with a stunning firework finale.
