A group of ‘amazing volunteers’ have planted almost 2,000 fruit trees in the local area in the past four years.
Now the charity Freely Fruity has been put forward for the The Green Community Award, sponsored by Tomato Energy.

The volunteers have planted trees in over 30 local schools and started nine large community orchards, says their nomination.
“They have also built eight community gardens and provided everything the communities need to get growing their own sustainable produce,” it adds.
Working with Reading Gateway churches, a community development association and Reading Borough Council, this year they have planted hundreds of fruit trees and built four community gardens in Whitley.
The charity has also worked with other local councillors and council employees to improve the environment and biodiversity in several other Reading locations.
With community groups and Holiday Activities and Food teams, they have educated children and adults on sustainable growing techniques.
“Their work has undoubtedly improved Reading for the people and wildlife that resides within it,” said the nomination.
The Green Community Award recognises communities that are making their neighbourhoods greener and cleaner; individuals, community groups and businesses that have implemented a project that has saved resources, implemented green initiatives or introduced successful recycling or upcycling.
It’s Climate Festival in Reading from Saturday – two weeks of free events to inspire climate action. Know any green teams who should get an award? Go to porawards.co.uk and nominate them.
