In a park in Reading a lion stands,
Strong and proud in commemoration
Of soldiers killed in a far off land,
Fighting they say for their nation.
For young men killed in Kandahar,
Battle of Maiwand in Afghanistan.
1880 was the date of this war
Not the recent fight against Taliban.
It’s been said before, and it’s more than plain.
Those who ignore history and do not learn
Are destined to live it over again
And nothing is solved as the fires of war burn.
In a park in Reading a lion stands
And still they die in far off lands.
