A SCHOOL in Tilehurst is seeking support as it signs up to take part in a nation-wide recycling contest.
Park Lane Primary School has set its sights on the prize of the The Sistema Recycled Playground Contest: a new playground frame made entirely of recycled materials.
Participating schools must collect as many plastic items as they can, including plastic food storage containers and lids, as well as reusable plastic water bottles and caps.
The school is asking residents and communities in Tilehurst to help their efforts by bringing in used plastic storage containers, water bottles, and caps.
These can be donated using a collection bin located next to the library at the Infant site on School Road, which is open to the public from 9am-5pm on weekdays.
Primary schools who take part in the competition must sign up to the Sistema Food Storage Container and Reusable Bottle Free Recycling Programme, a free national recycling programme.
It sees the recycling of used food storage containers bottles, which cannot be recycled through conventional kerbside recycling collections and would otherwise end up in landfill.
The school which collects the most will be awarded a playground with a frame made from 100% recycled material.
The recycled playground will comprise of two slides, an approach ramp with rope and a large joining platform amongst other features.
The winning and runner-up school will also both win a Sistema lunchbox and water bottle for each pupil.
Mrs. Browne, Head Teacher of Park Lane Primary School, commented: “We’re thrilled to be participating in this great contest from Sistema and we are calling on all members of the Tilehurst community to help us be in with a chance of winning a brand-new playground with a frame made from 100% recycled waste.
“Simply bring any used food storage containers and lids, as well as reusable plastic water bottles and caps, to the drop-off location collection box next to the library at the Infant Site on School Road, between the hours of 9 am to 5 pm Monday through Friday.
“This really is a great initiative that will not only help our school but also our environment, whilst educating our pupils and the local community on the importance of recycling.
“We also collect on TerraCycle’s Warburton’s Bakery Free Recycling Programme, Warburton’s Wax Free Recycling Programme and the Pladis Biscuits and Snacks Free Recycling, among others, so please feel free to drop off these types of waste to our public access collection point too.”
