On this day 18 years ago Reading FC won promotion to the top flight of English football for the first time in its history by securing a point at Leicester City.

Steve Coppell’s side not only etched themselves into Reading Football Club history by sealing promotion to the Premier League, but would go on to write themselves into English football history by recording the most ever points by a football league side (106), a record which has still yet to be broken.

After finding themselves a goal down for most of the contest, it was Kevin Doyle who netted the all important strike five minutes from time to confirm promotion.

A week later, Reading sealed their place as Championship winners with a thumping 5-0 victory over Derby County at the Madejski Stadium as thousands of fans took to the pitch to celebrate after the final whistle.

Despite having already won the title, Coppell’s men managed three wins and two draws from their remaining five fixtures to take their season tally of points to 106 as they smashed the points record in the EFL.

The final day of the 2005/06 season was capped off in perfect fashion as a sold out crowd witnessed the Royals defeat Queens Park Rangers 2-1 in a game which saw club captain Graeme Murty score the winning goal from the penalty spot.

That strike from Murty was his first goal of the season which meant that every regular outfield starter netted for the club across the league campaign.

18 years on from that famous day, the Royals are now fighting for survival in League One having endured a torrid time under owner Dai Yongge with the club still embroiled in a takeover saga.
